Uses
A central stimulant with adrafinil-like chemical properties is modalert (modafinil). It is used to treat shift-work sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnoea, and excessive daytime sleepiness linked to narcolepsy. It is well-known for its off-label usage for ADHD, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and even weight loss. It is also widely used as a study drug (nootropic).
Dosage and administration
Modafinil is used orally in a dose of 200 to 400 mg daily, in two divided doses, in the morning and at lunchtime, or as a single dose in the morning, for the treatment of the narcoleptic syndrome or obstructive sleep apnoea. The recommended daily dose for the treatment of shift-work sleep disturbance is 200 mg, administered once daily 1 hour prior to the start of work. Elderly patients should start with a daily dose of 100 mg and then adjust it as needed.
